The Newest Rupp

Meet Tumaren...

We adopted her this week! I watched a story on tv about this elephant orphanage in Kenya and couldn't stop thinking about it. These poor babies are mostly orphaned because their parents fall victim to poachers. The goal is to raise them and release them back into the wild.

When the are rescued they meet their foster parent who live with them 24/7 (like their biological parents would). Once they are released back into the wild they do not forget their family at the orphanage. They come back when/if they get hurt or sick to see the doctors, they come back to greet new babies and sometimes they stop by to just say hi to their foster parents! They are such amazing animals!

Here is Tumarens Story...
Name: Tumaren
Gender: Female
Date Born:September 26, 2008
Found: Alone, Standing by her dying mother
Location: Tumaren Ranch-Laikipia
Age on Arrival: 10 Months
Reason for being Orphaned: Poaching

7/22/2009 - The rescue of Tumaren

5pm on the 20th of July brought a call for Kerry Glen of Tumaren Ranch in Laikipia that a baby elephant had been seen by a dying mother, with no other elephants around. The mother elephant appeared paralyzed, possibly poisoned but the reason was uncertain.

The decision was made to capture the calf, since the mother was obviously beyond recovery. Kerry Glen and Jamie, along with the ranch workers captured the calf, fearing that it would not survive the death of its mother, since predators were prevalent on the ranch, and her mother was later euthanased by KWS. She was taken to their home, where Jamie remained near the calf in an adjoining room all night. It was a sleepless and very disturbed ordeal, because the distraught baby, cried all night for her mother, and even tried desperately to climb through a window.

The calf was flown to the Nairobi Nursery on the 21st July 2009 arriving at noon. She was still strong and aggressive (a good sign denoting the will to live and the reserves to make an effort), but she soon calmed down once the other Nursery elephants were brought in to impart hope and encouragement. The other orphans gave her a warm welcome, and immediately she responded, turning into a very affectionate member of the herd, calm and friendly to both her elephant orphan peers and their human family.

We named the new arrival “Tumaren” to denote her origin. She is about 10 months old and becomes the 22nd member of our Nursery herd of mini orphans ever partaking of the mudbath along with the others. An enchanting addition to the group, popular with the other elephants as well as her human admirers.

The Foster Parents send out updates monthly about how and what the orphans have been up to.
Here is the latest on Tumaren...

9/21/2010 - he orphans browsed peacefully in the forest, Sities sandwiched between Suguta and Olare enjoying the loving of both older girls. Sities then saw Chemi Chemi and Kibo playing a pushing game and decided to join them, running to come between the two boys and got pushed down by Kibo, who was targeting Chemi Chemi but got Sities instead. She screamed and within a second Suguta, Tumaren and Olare were there. Suguta went for Kibo who was standing over Sities as she was getting up, probably wanting to say “sorry”, but Suguta knocked him to his knees. Chemi Chemi wisely took off at speed to avoid being punished.

During the mudbath hour, a lion came to the nearby rocks adjoining the forest, eyeing the warthogs who were near the elephants t the mudbath. The warthogs disappeared post- haste!

33 Weeks

49 Days To Go...

We graduated from Baby Basic's Class on Monday. It was a 2 week course on caring for your newborn. It was a nice refresher for us and we did learn some new things. Our next class is Labor 1,2,3 in a few weeks. And then we are ready!

We met with a Pediatricians Office this week. It was great that we got to meet the doctors and sit down and ask questions before the baby is born. We feel really comfortable with this practice and it is close to home.

Friday we had a OB appointment and it went great. Itty is measuring right on track! Our next appointment is our last 2 week appointment and then we start going every week.

5 Years

Friday was Vince and I's 5 year wedding anniversary! The past 5 years have really flown by. I never would have imagined that we would be where we are today.

I started thinking about the ride we have been on the past 7 years...
4 House, 3 Cities, 2 States, 1 Dog and 1 Baby (almost)

We celebrated by having a nice dinner at Capital Grill. It really good and we savored every minute since we know it will be awhile before we will have a nice dinner out again!

Vince gave me beautiful new diamond earrings! He is amazing and I can't believe he is still spoiling me 7 years later. I got him a new watch. His old watch I had given to him on our wedding day so it was time for a new one! I am truly blessed to have found and married the love of my life! I am such a lucky girl!

Storms & Sales

Wednesday afternoon we had a crazy storm blow in. The wind, rain and hail were evil. It didn't last long but when it was over we didn't have power but we were some of the lucky ones because we didn't lose any trees or have any damage to the house. We got power back about midnight, so we were without power for about 9 hours. Again we are among the lucky ones, some people were told not to expect power until Sunday.

Wednesday was also the first day of the Just Between Friends Sale. It is a consignment sale for baby and children's clothes, toys and gear. Since we are first time parents we got to shop before it was open to the public. We were hoping to find a jogging stroller but didn't have any luck. We weren't quite sure what to expect but we did end up finding some good deals. We got a brand new moses basket, a travel swing, some toys, a humidifier and an extra almost new boppy for downstairs.

31 Weeks

62 Day and Counting! We had a doctors appointment on Wednesday and everything is still going perfect. He is measuring right on track and the best news was that he has flipped and is head down! We even got a quick ultrasound to confirm. It was a very nice surprise to see him for a minute! I am feeling pretty good. More tired than usual and the swelling is starting to get really annoying. But the heartburn/indigestion seems to have eased up a bit since his head isn't in my ribcage anymore.

This weekend was spent the same way the past few weekends have been...tackling the "To Do List".
We knew when we moved in that the driveway needed to be resurfaced and fall is the time to tackle this project. So Vince patched the cracks Friday night after work and started the re-sealing process. I don't think we knew what we were getting into with this project. Poor Vince. We thought an hour or two of work and a few buckets of sealer and then a nice new look for the driveway. The reality was 6 hours of work, 1 trip to Home Depot and 5 buckets of sealer equals one sore back and one tired hubby. But the driveway does look great!

Miles had run out of homemade doggie treats a few months back and I finally got around to making him some new ones. I figured if I don't do it now I won't get it done before Itty gets here. Vince and Miles joined in on the baking which made it so much more fun! Vince was my cookie cutter and Miles was the official taste tester! When all was done we made a ton of cookies that should last him awhile! And he even decided he could spare a few and send Zoie some!

I have been craving chocolate covered strawberries for weeks now so I finally got around to buying the chocolate and strawberries on Saturday. We had some left over melted chocolate so we got a little creative and dipped Nilla Waffers and Pringles. Vince liked the Pringles while I preferred the Nilla Waffers!

Labor Day 2010

Labor Day Weekend in the Burgh was nice and low key. We were lucky and had great weather the whole weekend!

We kicked off the weekend a tad early on Thursday night by attending an event Vince was helping to sponsor through one of his clients. It was called Savor Pittsburgh, this was the 5th year for it and it is a fundraiser for The American Respiratory Alliance of Western Pennsylvania. It is a great event where all the top chefs in the city come together and cook their favorite recipes. You get to walk around and sample everyones work with cocktails and socialize. We ran into a few people we knew and chatted before taking off to get me a "real meal" at Cheesecake Factory.

Friday, Vince had to work so Miles and I started Operation Baby Organization. After a long day of organizing we treated ourselves to Sesame Inn for some yummy Chinese food. Vince also had time to put together Itty's new rocking horse from his Great Grandma Werner! I know he is going to LOVE it! We also hung our new shelves above the bar! We have been looking for something to put over the bar since we moved in and finally decided on the shelves.

Saturday we had a full day of running errands. We were on the hunt for Itty's coming home outfit and a new coffee table or ottoman for the living room. Vince took me to a town called Oakmont for lunch and then to this amazing bakery for desert. We hit Vince's least favorite place in the world...the mall. Where we got lucky and found an outfit for Itty and got Vince some new glasses (finally)! We couldn't decide on which onsie to buy for the outfit so we bought both! We finished the night off with some BBQ on the grill!

Sunday morning we went to our normal breakfast spot The Italian Kitchen for breakfast. It is the best breakfast in town and its super cheap! The afternoon was spent in the kitchen making lasagna. It was our first attempt on our own making Homemade Piane Lasagna. And I am proud to say we didn't have to make one phone call for help and we now have 5 lasagnas in the freezer!Of course we had to have some for dinner...and boy was it good!

This morning we slept in and then made french toast for breakfast! Then it was off to another furniture store to continue the table/ottoman hunt. As luck would have it we found one on sale for a great price! So now we have a new oversized leather ottoman that works perfect as our new coffee table! We took Miles on a nice walk and are now just relaxing enjoying the last few hours of the holiday weekend!

Boring Weekend

We had a rather boring weekend in the Burgh, which was fine with us! Friday night we went to Vincent's Italian Restaurant for dinner. It is a very casual pizza and pasta restaurant not to far from our house. After dinner we decided to do a little work in the nursery. We got a lot of things organized and put away. Saturday morning we had a tour of the family birthing center at St Clair Hospital. There was 47 people in the tour group. We had an hour long presentation and q & a time before splitting into smaller groups and actually touring the facilities. It was nice to see the labor & delivery floor, actual rooms and the nursery. After the tour we headed downtown to make a quick return at BabyLand and then had lunch at Bistro 19 (one of our fav places)! Saturday night we grilled some steak and chicken and then watch a movie. Sunday was pretty uneventful, just hung around the house. We had our typical Italian Sunday feast for dinner and then watched the movie Babies!

Awhile back we were at the vet and they told us that fruits and veggies (except for onions, grapes, chocolate and raisins) are a much better snack/treat than typical dog treats. Since then we have increased his amount of fruits and veggies daily so we can help keep him healthy! He loves blueberries, broccoli, bananas and carrots the best. He is not a fan of celery, green beans or zucchini. Any type of melon makes his drool all over the kitchen until you give him some! This summer we found out that he loves corn on the cob! We don't give him the cob of course but if you hold it for him he will eat it right off the cob. Vince took some pictures Saturday night of him chowing down!
